Profiles - Tone Def

Name: Tony Walker AKA Tone Def
Based: Edinburgh
Genre: techno/ breaks/ various

Early influences for me were mostly Heavy Metal/ Prog rock bands from the late seventies/ early eighties.  Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Pink Floyd and princess Di all turned me on during my teenage years... However, nothing lasts for ever and by the late eighties my interest in these things was waning.  One mad summer in the early nineties (can't remember which year exactly!), turned me on to the ambient electronic sounds of people like the orb, FSOL, Andy Weatherall and underworld.  I was lusting for more when some friends took me to see Dave Clarke one Friday night....  Bingo!!!  This was what I'd been looking for all along...  The music blew me away that night and again and again on successive nights with DJs like Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier, Claude Young and Ritchie Hawtin.  That was it, I was well and truly hooked, got myself a set of second hand Gemini's and within a year was doing a night called 'the Cartel' in harleys cellar bar, under the Phoenix on Broughton St. Originally I played mostly techno but in recent years I have found myself playing from a real mixed bag of musical styles.  I don't like to categorise music too much but if its powerful with a dark edge or funky and makes you smile then I'll play it!

The past couple of years have seen me mostly just playing at parties but last September I was lucky enough to win the Beat 106/ S.I. sound and light DJ competition with a half hour set featuring the likes of Lee Coombes, Greens Keepers and Three Amigos.  Apart from winning some really cool equipment I also got to do a guest DJ slot on the Jengaheads show on beat 106.  I am currently working on a project with a three other guys on double bass, keyboards and drums.  They're all amazingly talented musicians and its sounding really good so watch this space... Hope you can check out my stylee' @ a Miscreat party near you soon!!
