Man With The Movie Camera sees The Cinematic Orchestra turning their hand to
scoring the soundtrack for an accompanying film of the same name (DVD
preview included on this CD).
It is unclear what came first for The Cinematic Orchestra - the music, or
the film. Either way Man With The Movie Camera makes for entertaining
viewing and listening, and it is unnecessary to establish which medium is
the chicken and which is the egg.
The film depicts the hard life found in Russia in the early part of the last
century, with images of industrial machinery at work being cut up and edited
to give the feeling that they are dancing to the music. The miserable faces
on the machine operators suggest an entirely different atmosphere in
reality.
Musically, Man With The Movie Camera is an interesting piece, as it ebbs and
flows from very traditional sounding music to the very modern without ever
really breaking stride.
The track begins in classical fashion, until a lolloping drum beat kicks in
to tell the listener that Ninja Tune and The Cinematic Orchestra are at it
again. The pace is then picked up and all of a sudden the listener is in
the middle of a modern musical soundscape, just as Russia (as shown on the
DVD) had woken up to the industrial, modern age.
DomU provides a punchier, almost industrial remix, which is also very good,
but for me, The Cinematic Orchestra require no help at all in creating an
overall package which is very worthwhile indeed.
