250,000 descended upon Brighton pier last summer to hear the sounds of
Fatboy Slim and Midfield General, amongst others. Big Beach Boutique II is
a mix of the big tunes heard on the day, and for those that were there it
will act as a pretty good souvenir.
But let’s be honest, the 17 tracks are fairly uninspiring. Midfield
General’s own Reach Out featuring Linda Lewis’ uplifting vocals is a good
start to the mix and is certainly one of the highlights. Fatboy Slim’s
Talkin’ Bout My Baby then follows, ensuring that his understudy for the day
doesn’t steal the show.
Space Cowboy’s Crazy Talk and Mint Royale’s Sexiest Man in Jamaica help
ensure the sort of commercial success for Big Beach Boutique II that Fatboy
Slim is used to. The inclusion of Groove Armada’s Superstylin’ and his own
insipid remix of Pure Shores by All Saints will also help sales, but really
add very little to the mix.
I’m not sure if this was a case of having to be there, but for those that
weren’t there I’m not sure if this will do much for you. Anyone who
happened to be there, and there are a quarter of a million of you, will
probably put on their rose-tinted spectacles and hail Big Beach Boutique II
as essential listening.
