Intended as a replacement to the now withdrawn Gigilo 1-4 compilations
due to a problem with artwork this is a bit of a hit and miss
compilation from DJ Hells label. Don't get me wrong these guys have been
putting out quality electro and techno before this years electroca$h
revolution but whilst at points brilliant there are times during this that i just
cringe.
It all starts off well with the retro sounding "Hot Room" from Linda
Lamb and batters on thru some excellent stuff from the likes of DMX Crew
and Dopplereffekt before launching into Tiga's classic "Sunglasses at
Night" but at some points the mixing just goes to pot and its shocking
that its allowed on a compilation cd - for instance the mix into "I'm a
Disco Dancer" is shocking - if that happened at a miscreat night there
would be some shocked looks i'm sure!
There's no doubt there are some class cuts on here such as 3 Miss Kitten
and The Hacker tracks and the Hackers mix of "Soul On Soul" by Marc
Almond. Overall its a good selection of tunes with a couple of notable
exceptions like Mitu's "Skylight" which is just house cringe. It
typifies the problem with having such a diverse label - people are gonna
love some stuff and hate others. But the mixing is my main criticism -
it sounds like a first take without much practice. But in the end of the
day its a good cd and I've been playing it loads.
