Counterpoint Records are masters of the truly worthwhile compilation album.
While major labels just re-package the same old tracks, Counterpoint take it
upon themselves to track down tunes of genuine quality that you simply will
not have heard elsewhere.
This is a collection of ‘the finest independent jazz/soul/Afto/Latin tracks
from the worldwide underground.’ And you know what, it is too.
There is a wonderful selection of funky tracks on Jazz Bizniz 3 by artists I
would never otherwise have heard of, such as the funky trumpeter Frank
Walton, the incredible organist Sir William D. Portis Jr, and Cee-Knowledge
- a hip-hop outfit with a wonderful warm quality so rare in that genre.
There are fast and funky urban tracks such as Deep Sensation’s Harlem &
42nd, while Raoul Zequeira transport you to a dark, smoky Havana club with
their infectious Hey! Hey! Hey!....Si Senor.
All 14 tracks are so good, each bringing something so different to the
collection, that all other compilers of ‘nu-jazz’ compilations must be
tearing their hair out at their inability to compete with Counterpoint’s
originality, knowledge and passion for this music.
With a release date of 03/03/03, you’ve been well warned.
