"Geedorah is a space monster. He’s not from Earth," says underground
hip-hop legend MF Doom, or King Geedorah as he’s known on this project.
"The whole album is Geedorah’s alien perspective on humans."
Many samples from sci-fi/monster movies are to be found throughout Take Me
To Your Leader as might be expected, but little else on this album could be
described as formulaic. MF Doom’s production and rhyming throughout is
certainly otherworldly, and from start to finish the listener is gripped as
if in the clutches of... well, a space monster of course.
Anti-Matter is the opening single and this is one of the hottest hip-hop
tunes of 2003. A funky, lazy guitar loop and a slamming beat, alongside
some top quality rhyming makes this a future classic.
Many tracks have cosmic, spacey production such as Lockjaw and The Final
Hour, while the likes of Fazers and the amazing Krazy World use slightly
more conventional strings loops. There’s enough variety and quality on here
to confirm that MF Doom is a more important figure in hip-hop than he will
ever get credit for.
"I made it different on purpose. A blend of ill lyrics and instrumentals.
To me it’s way iller than any of the wack shit out now." Yes, this is
hip-hop - but not as we know it. Go buy.
