Following the poor reception rightly given to the disappointing '100th
Window', Virgin have gone for the unsurprising move of bringing in a couple
of hot remixers to touch up 'Special Cases'. And they don't come much hotter
than Force Inc's glitch and click house specialists Akufen and Luomo.
First up is Akufen's dark and spooky effort. Wisely using Sinead O'Connor's
vocal fairly sparsely, the atmospheric strings and vocal snippets combined
with his usual stop-start glitchiness give his mix an edgy leftfield vibe.
As usual, his use of basslines is loose and funky, sitting nicely with the
sharp drum programming.
Luomo's mix is a more out and out house track but is still a break from the
norm. While he probably uses a little more of the vocal than is necessary,
the groove is infectuous and the track floats along rather dreamily. Another
slow-burning groover then from everyone's favourite Finnish house head.
All in all, a pretty good remix package with Akufen's turn the pick of the
bunch.
