I have to admit to being surprised to hear that the Psychonauts had signed
to Gigolo having heard some of their excellent downbeat but funky DJ sets.
However DJ Hell's label revels in the unexpected and long may it continue
to do so. That being said, I was very disappointed in 'Fear Is Real' which is
a fairly non-descript piece of dubby techno which neither does much or goes
anywhere. At best, it sounds like a mid-90's Leftfield cast-off.
Fortunately 'Hips For Scotland' salvages things. A simple, mellow track
led by acoustic guitar and James Yorkston's subtly detached vocals, it's the
sort of thing I would expect from the Psychonauts. 'Wild In Your Eyes' is
also another fairly chilled number, using various percussive elements to
build the rhythm before a dreamy flute comes in. Hopefully the album
contains more of these, and less tracks like ' Fear Is Real'.
