I think this is probably the hardest review I have ever had to do. You see,
Apricot Morning skips over traditional musical boundaries as if they simply
aren’t there, and meanders effortlessly through every musical genre
imaginable.
It therefore seems unfair to attempt to summarise the unfathomable work that
has gone into this album in just a few paragraphs. However, as I have
Quantic’s unique sound shaking my computer right now, and you presumably do
not, then that is what I must try and do.
Quantic is obviously a music lover. Jazz, funk and soul influences are in
abundance throughout Apricot Morning. Slamming breakbeats always act as the
underlay for whichever thick pile Quantic chooses to furnish his sound -
whether that is funky piano and organ loops, jazzy horns, or anything else
you may care to think of (it will be on Apricot Morning somewhere).
Top UK hip-hop crew Aspects offer their considerable talents on the stripped
down but typically funky Primate Boogaloo, while Alice Russell lends her
soulful vocals to the excellent Sweet Calling and Search The Heavens. The
other tracks are simply awesome, funky instrumental rockers - each one
offering something exciting and different to the track that’s gone before.
A real blend of styles, influences, tempos and moods makes Apricot Morning
like no other record I have ever heard. Try and hear it for yourself soon.
Quantic and Alice Russell play Aberdeen’s The Lemon Tree on Saturday October
26th and Trouble at The Blue Note in Edinburgh on Friday December 6th.
