Following hot on the heels of Paris The Black Fu's 'Unfriendly' (under his
Black Future guise rather than as one of the Detroit Grand Pubahs), the
second release on newly-founded Detroit label Motech comes from UR protege
DJ 3000. And his debut EP follows in the fine traditions of his Motor City
amigos.
Main cut 'Stand Alone' is a simply structured dancefloor groover. However
it's dominated by an ingredient that many producers often forget to include
these days - a monstrous bassline that's sure to shatter speakers the world
over. On the B-side, 'Hemi' is more of a tribal affair with more thought put
into the drum programming than on 'Stand Alone'. Once again however it's the
low frequencies that grab you and get the mind and body moving. Closing
track is 'Clutch' which is probably the most UR-influenced of the three
tracks with the arpeggiated lead sounds reminiscent of much of Mike Banks'
work. That in itself however is no bad thing!
