The Roots - ‘The Seed’ (MCA)

For anyone who may have just crawled out from under a rock, this review is for you. Everyone else will already own the album (Phrenology) and will be buying this single as a matter of course.

The Roots are regularly touted as the finest hip-hop group on the planet - and I find it difficult to disagree with that view.

The Seed (featuring Cody Chesnutt’s vocals) is by no means the finest track on Phrenology, but should still be owned by anyone with even just a passing interest in hip-hop.

It is bouncier, and dare I say it, more poppy than most of The Roots’ previous singles (particularly with Chesnutt’s R’n’B chorus), but Black Thought could rap over the Six O’Clock News theme tune and it would still sound earth-shatteringly brilliant.

Buy it.
