Wolverhampton has never been known as a hotbed of UK hip-hop, but neither
was Bristol until a few highly talented groups paved the way for those that
followed. Legendary Status is sure to put Wolverhampton on the map.
Wolftown Committee is a ten strong collaboration of Black Country hip-hop
talent, produced by Tricksta and Pez, and taking in Vicious Circle and
Villains.
The 21 tracks, and the countless different styles and flows displayed
throughout certainly makes Legendary Status excellent value - but there’s
more to this album than just value.
DJ Amo provides the excellent scratch-up Amo-nition, while Jai Boo, the
crew’s only female member, shoots from the hip with her no-nonsense vocals.
The other emcees, too numerous to mention, have all got skills in abundance.
WV1 is a real banger which lets everyone know in no uncertain terms exactly
where the Committee come from, and they only just stop short of giving out
addresses and telephone numbers.
Dangerous Place talks about the trials of life, while Maintain is a funky
slow burner about the need for focus in your life, and Big Batty is about,
well, big batty of course. No stone is left unturned on this album.
But it’s the excellent MC’s For Days which is really what Wolftown Committee
are all about - emcee after emcee spitting, and spitting hard. Legendary
Status isn’t just a showcase of hot rapping talent, however, as the
production is equally impressive. Tricksta and Pez have tailor-made the
beats to the point where they compliment each emcee so perfectly that they
could hardly fail to shine.
Wolftown Committee have dispensed with the UK hip-hop inferiority complex
which has sometimes led to an Americanisation in our hip-hop. This is a
crew who are proud of themselves and where they come from (the building on
the cover is their local boozer), and for that they deserve legendary
status.
